Ok! This sounds really good! Here’s some tips from one author to another…

1. Do it in first person. Choose a son/daughter who you think would have some really interesting opinions on their posh life. What do they think of their siblings and parents? Do they wish they weren’t posh? Do they like it?

2. Give it a past. The more the reader knows about before, the more they’ll want to know about later. But keep something hidden, something the main character won’t find out about until near the end.

3. Twist, twist, twist! Give your reader a good shock. What could it be? A sibling turns out to be adopted? A big move? A dead uncle? If your reader can see the whole storyline coming, they might not recommend the book, or they might even stop reading.

4. Use description! Put the picture in the reader’s head. Sometimes, when someone has illustrations in their book, they decide not to use so much description. This doesn’t work! A good book has good description. Listen to your teachers moan about adjectives and adverbs! Trust me, it helps!

5. Give the main character a good imagination. If they are different from the family, wild and imaginative, the reader will want to see how they react to their posh life.

6. Research the names. This may sound weird, but a name can have a backstory. Google, ‘Meaning of name…’ or ‘Names that mean…’ and you can really feel the character, even when the reader can only know if THEY research.

What about a charaters father/mother disappears and the main character has to go find them and they have an adventure!
