In this book, Soren’s sister Eglantine is recovering from the strange enchantment that caused her to say things about Tytos, barn owls, being supreme and ruling everyone. She remembers where she was taken, a castle near Ambala and The Beaks, and they go there. She was stone stunned by the Pure Ones there, and their leader, the mysterious High Tyto, also known as Metal Beak.
They find The Rogue Smith of Silverveil, who made battle claws for the High Tyto. She Tells them that he is huge, and injured his face, eyes and beak in fights which is why he wears a mask.
They find Ezylryb in a Devil’s Triangle of flecks, which means he cannot fly and feels dizzy. They burn the flecks and are going to fly away, but The High Tyto is watching them and attacks with the other Pure Ones. Soren burns his mask and reveals that it is his brother Kludd, who then tries to kill him. His parents’ scrooms – ghosts – warned him about Metal Beak in the last book, but they didn’t say that it was Kludd. Soren finds out that Kludd must have killed their parents and burns his mask. Kludd flies off screaming, “Death to Soren! Long live Tytos supreme! Death to the turnfeather! Death to Soren!”
