Really?!? Wow, that’s really weird! I practice with a book that I got from the library, and it’s going pretty good! In the book, it says that you should practice in a place where noone can hear you play, but we live in a flat, so I really don’t have a choice! It does hurt your fingers a bit, but it hurts less, after a while! Good luck to you, too!
