I would recommend The Little White Horse by Elisabeth Goudge. It is about a girl called Maria who goes to live with a distant relative, and has to right some wrongs that her ancestor had done.

Also, I would recommend A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. It is about some children who’s parents die and so they are sent to live with an evil relation who wants to steal the Baudelaire fortune. If you don’t mind books which don’t always end with “happily ever after” then I would definitely suggest this book to you.
