Freya is dreading turning fourteen - that marks the official end of her childhood and when she takes up full duties of a Valkyrie - a collector of souls from humanity's battlefields. But Freya is unlike any other Valkyrie. She doesn't want to follow in the footsteps of the legends before her. As she observes from Asgard, she tries to understand what it is to be human: to make friends with girls her own age and laugh with boys, without the fear of causing their death with one touch. Little does she know that her dreams will soon be realized: on her first battlefield mission, Freya reaps the soul of a soldier with unfinished business that will send her to the human world on a deadly quest. And there she must battle both ordinary and extraordinary enemies to create a new VALKYRIE legend. 'Kate O'Hearn serves up a winning mix of modern adventure and classic fantasy.' Rick Riordan, author of Percy Jackson

An enticing story in Norse Mythology. It's about a girl turning 14 getting ready to complete the full duties of becoming a valkyrie. Not only do you learn new facts about Norse Mythology, a new interest in reading will overcome you!

I really, really, really, really loved this book. It was almost the best book I've ever read! My favourite character was Alma. She was so kind! I would recommend this book to 9 - 12 year olds who like Norse mythology.

Valkyrie is an amazing novel about a girl who has just become 14 signalling she is to take on the full responsibilities of being a Valkyrie. The first man she reaps asks her to promise him she will help his family. I don’t recommend this book to children under the age of 8 as in parts it can be quite violent and upsetting. However, I give this book 5/5 stars as it is a brilliant read.

This story is really interesting and would appeal to those who seek adventure and suspense. Whilst you find out all about the life of a Valkyrie, it also tells a story of true friendship between Freya and Archie. Their relationship is so strong they would risk their lives for one another and Freya puts everything on the line to save her human best-friend when he is on the verge of life or death. You also read about a lovely sister bond and how brave one could be. This is a must read for anyone interested in myths and legends.
