This book is about Conn, a wizard who has lost his locus magicalicus and is in prison. Early in the book, his master, Nevery, secretly hides lock pick wires in a coat present and Conn escapes. As he really wants a locus magicalicus, he uses pyrotechnics to make a spell that should point to where his locus stone is. However, it creates a huge line of destruction on the way to his locus stone. With Nevery's help, he manages to get out of the city without being caught and starts following the line of destruction. Here, he meets Rowan, the duchesses daughter and is convinced to let her and her fellow swordsman, Avery, come with him. On the journey, they keep having to pull him off the path as the pull of his magicalicus is too strong. When left outside a village while they stock up on supplies, he is taken by a magnificent dragon, thought to be extinct. It takes him along the line, ina huge cave on a mountain, filled with hoards of stones, to be locus stones. He searches through the stones for days, and when he does find his locus magicalicus, a small dragon name dpip eats it. He manages to steal pip in his backpack and the dragon flies him back to Wellmet, whereas before he stopped Conn escaping. He is just in time as Arionhvar is attacking Wellmet. He manages to secure both magics to a river of slow-silver underground, making Arionhvar be at peace now it has a city and people to dwell with. Unfortunately, Conn gave his life up in the process.
