Coot Club
Arthur Ransome
Tom Dudgeon has cast off a motor cruiser from its moorings to protect a coot’s nest, but now the cruiser is searching high and low for him – even offering a reward. Tom accepts an invitation for a week’s cruise to teach his new friends, Dick and Dorothea how to sail. You couldn’t get a better sailor than Tom but can he really stay one jump ahead of his pursuers long enough to complete the voyage?

I think this book is really good, it’s about a boy who loves birds so when a big motorboat moored on a coot’s nest he cuts them adrift and spends the summer hiding from angry tourists. My favourite character is Tom Dudgeon, the boy who saves the baby coots and cuts the boat adrift. I recommend this book to anyone who likes sailing, adventure, or loves birds, like me.

My favourite part is when Tom becomes a outlaw.

Having read Swallows and Amazons I moved onto this book. I enjoyed reading it but it was quite a technical book with lots of details about sailing boats. There are a couple of chapters devoted to the sail down several rivers towards Great Yarmouth and beyond. Once again Arthur Ransome's enthusiasm is plain to see although I preferred it when the books were set in the Lake District as I know the area a bit. If you are interested in birds then this book will also be of interest as both Dick and Tom are keen ornithologists. I gave this book a 3 as it was quite drawn out. When I am older I may appreciate the book more.

I enjoyed this book because of the way they learnt to sail and had to hide the outlaw.

When Tom Dudgeon sets off a motor cruiser, named the Margoletta, from its moorings to save a coot’s nest, he knows that he needs to keep away from the boat. However, the crew on the boat see him in the distance and so they know who to look for. With the help of Mrs Barrable and some friends visiting her, Dick and Dorothea, the Margoletta roars straight past him. Mrs Barrable takes Tom, Dick, Dorothea and friends, Bess (Port) and Nell (Starboard), on a trip to let Tom, Port and Starboard teach Dick and Dorothea how to sail and row. How will Tom keep away from them until the boat’s hire runs out? Read the book to find out.

You should read this book because, it is one of the best books that Arthur Ransome has written. It is really adventurous because there are some parts where you really feel sorry for the characters because something bad is going to happen like Tom getting caught by the hullaballoos at Yarmouth. My favourite characters are Port and Starboard, and Tom because they are all really good sailors, which is something I am not. You should really read this book because it is set in the Norfolk Broads, which is a really good place for wildlife(as Dick proves) and also a good place to set a story , especially a sailing one, what with all the rivers. My favourite part is when the hullaballoos wreck the Margolletta because they get really angry and you really feel not very sad for them because it was their own fault, and they deserved it because they were horrible to everyone they saw.Just read this book!
