Discover an extraordinary tale of innocence, friendship and the horrors of war.

‘Some things are just sitting there, minding their own business, waiting to be discovered. Like America. And other things are probably better off left alone’

Nine-year-old Bruno has a lot of things on his mind. Who is the ‘Fury’? Why did he make them leave their nice home in Berlin to go to ‘Out-With’ ? And who are all the sad people in striped pyjamas on the other side of the fence? The grown-ups won’t explain so Bruno decides there is only one thing for it – he will have to explore this place alone. What he discovers is a new friend. A boy with the very same birthday. A boy in striped pyjamas. But why can’t they ever play together?

‘A small wonder of a book’ Guardian

BACKSTORY: Read an interview with the author JOHN BOYNE and learn all about the Second World War in Germany.

Everybody says it is the saddest thing they have ever read. Personally I did not find it sad in the slightest.

I loved this book so much. It showed view of a young child in ww2. The book has humour which I like, but the ending made me cry. ALOT. But I still loved the book! Recommend to anyone who wants to read about history and more specifically wold war 2, but it’s better if you’re older or are 11 as the ending is really sad.

It is not as good as I thought it would be. I can't believe that Bruno (the main charictor) lives in a 5 story house!

It was a beautifully written book about a Nazi boy in WW2 who makes friends with a Jewish prisoner at Auschwitz. It has a rather sad ending but I would definitely recommend it.

This book was based on the topic of World War 2 ; it was about a German boy named Bruno who's Father was in the German military. Due to the holocaust , he had to move to a small house . Bruno did not like this , as the place was melancholy . He saw a barbed wire fence and met a boy named Shmuel. Over time they become friends so when Bruno has to leave , he decided to sneak in . They both then by accidently wander into a gas chamber and die.

It starts a little boring, but once you've read the ending - heart warming. A tale of friendship, resilience and WW2. Recommended for 7+

THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!!!!! I LOVED IT. ONE OF MY FAVORITE NOVELS. In this book, there is a 9-year-old boy named, Bruno and he lives in the city of Berlin with his older sister, Gretel (A Hopeless Case), his mother and his father. One evening he returns from his school with his three bestfriends for life; Karl, Daniel and Martin, he finds Maria (the maid) packing his things up. That evening he finds out that he will be leaving his beloved home and going to some place else. With a heavy heart he leaves his home in Berlin, saying goodbye to his three bestfriends for life and steps foot in a much less greater house. He hates it there but begins to like it when he makes a friend named Shmuel wearing striped pajamas. But this leads him to something horrible. 'Some things are just sitting there waiting to be discovered. Other things are probably better off left alone.' I WOULD RATE THIS BOOK 11 OUT OF 10!!!!
