The book is about the Swallows and Amazons when they are trying to get to what they call the North Pole (actually the head of the lake). When Dick and Dorothea meet them, they too are swept into a Polar adventure. This book is set in the Lake District during the winter, in January and February. Nancy had mumps and so everyone was in quarantine and could not go back to school for four weeks.

I don't know which character I like most they are all brilliant characters who always find out some way to have an adventure. If you enjoy adventure I definitely recommend this book to you but catch a virus or anything.

Like the rest of this series I really loved this book. My favourite character was Dorothea because she loves books.

I thought this book was really cool the way they went to the North Pole. I have read Swallows and Amazons and am loving reading through the rest of the series. I like Nancy the best. She is a pirate!

I liked this book because of the fact that they didn't think they would be able to go to the pole but got an extra month because of mumps.

This is the fourth book in the Swallows and Amazons series. When the Swallows and Amazons meet up with Dick and Dorothea they start skating and having an amazing winter holiday. However, when Nancy falls ill with mumps, the rest of the children are not allowed to go back to school, so they get another month of holiday. During this extra time Nancy and Peggy’s uncle returns from being away and, with the help of plans that Nancy made before she fell ill, he creates an expedition for them all to go to the “North Pole”, when Nancy is better. After a bit of trouble over a flag, the day of the expedition and a rescue party, they all reach the “North Pole”! Find out what the North Pole is and who reaches the Pole first.

The swallows and amazons meet the D's and go of on a wild adventure then Nancy gets mumps. The D's sail through a snow storm because they didn't come to the meeting they found the pole on the wrong day.
