Pompeii: A Roman Girl's Diary, AD 78-79
Sue Reid
A new title to add to the popular My Story series. It’s August AD 78 and Claudia is at the Forum in Pompeii. It’s a day of strange encounters and even odder portents. When the grond shakes Claudia is convinced it is a bad omen. What does it all mean? And why is she so disturbed by Vesuvius, the great volcan that looms over the city.

It's AD78 and 13-year-old Claudia is starting to get worried. They've got a crack in their wall and it's getting bigger and people are saying that Vesuvius is stirring. This story is about the villagers of Pompeii slowly realising that something is wrong as more and more earth tremors spread across the city. It shows friendship and loyalty and is written as Claudia's diary. It is based on fact but features a fictional character and shows what life was like in AD78-79. She has very different views to people now and they are often making sacrifices to the Gods but personalities have not much changed. This book is hard to put down with very deep meaning - it really makes you think a lot about how it must have been when the famous eruption happened. The book finishes on a very big cliffhanger and makes you wish you could find out what happens next. I really enjoy the My Story series and would advise people aged 10-15 with an interest in history to give them a go.

I loved this book very much, not only is it a great read it is historically correct so it helps you know about this period of time. Some of the names of places and people are quite difficult to pronounce. I liked the way she was speaking to herself as well as the readers. Hope you find this helpful :)
