The first in Caroline Lawrence's internationally bestselling Roman Mysteries series, re-issued with a fantastic new cover look. Flavia Gemina is a natural at solving mysteries. The daughter of a ship's captain living in Ostia, the port of Rome, in AD79, she and her three friends, Jonathan, a Jewish boy (and secretly a Christian); Nubia, an African slave girl; and Lupus, a mute beggar boy, must work together to discover who is beheading the watchdogs that guard people's homes, and why. A talented storyteller, Caroline Lawrence has created a delightfully readable and accessible series that children will want to read time and time again.

I accidentally read the 3rd book first but I still really enjoyed this all the same. My favourite character is Nubia the slave girl. I give it 5 stars and would DEFINETLY recommend it to my friends. Come to think of it, I think I already have! I will definitely try to get the rest of the series and read it. Another useful thing is that I have been able to learn my roman numerals better than at school.

I think this book taught us a lot about the Roman times. I enjoyed the exciting chase from the salve traders. I thought the characters were interesting, especially Nubia and Lupus. The end was very exciting and unexpected! I would recommend this to adults and children.

This book as very good as Flavia makes a lot of friends (Jonathan, Nubia and Lupus) and the person who assists Flavia, Libertus, turned out to be the villain.

I really loved this book. Flavia is my favourite character and it's a really good book. I love all Flavia's friends and it's funny and mysterious at the same time. I really recommend this book and I love that it's set in ancient Rome. I love the Roman Mysteries and am reading the others too. I'm so glad that there are more than one.

It gave me a ‘what will happen next feeling!’ The only bad thing that happened was that it gave me bad dreams because there was a lot of beheading and fighting. Everything else was reallly good! I liked Jonathon the best because he was really adventurous but at the same time, he was extremely cautious. I would recommend this book to someone else as it was a great book and I wanted to read for a bit longer.
