A character series for 6-9s featuring the funny, quirky Violet Mackerel – a girl with a mission to think outside the box.

After making friends with an indoor sparrow at the shopping centre, Violet develops her ""Theory of Helping Small Things"" (if you do something to help a small thing, it will find a way of helping you back). Her sister Nicola (who is always grumpy) is working on a natural science project, so Violet decides to study a ladybird called Small Gloria. When things turn disastrous for Nicola, Violet and Small Gloria, they put their pea brains together and find out about natural habitats.

Violet loves her big sister Nickola, but she seems to be going through a stage that her mum says she will overcome. Until then, Nickola has locked herself up in her room to do her natural science display project. And life goes on... Violet tried to help a small ladybug that she has named small Gloria by taking her out of her 'natural habitat' and into a small glass jar which she has tried to make as comfy as possible. The next morning, everyone but Nickola and Violet has gone to the market - Nickola to do her project and Violet to look after Small Gloria. But there is a horrid surprise awaiting Violet in the morning - Small Gloria is dead! I would recommend this book to other readers. I would be for ages 7 - 12.

I liked this book because it was about nature and how Violet helped a little ladybird. She also helped her big sister with her project about the life-cycle of a ladybird. I would definitely recommend this book for people who like nature.

I learnt how to take care of a lady bug. I like Violet because she is very kind and helpful to insects. She helps them when they are in trouble. My favourite book so far!
