My favourite character is Gwendolen because when she had traded her Mother's diamond earrings for some dried dragons blood, and she cast a spell on the blood at night when it was in a cauldron and she made an enormous spider and set it on a dinner party in Chrestomanci's castle. I would highly recommend this book.

This book was AMAZING! I loved it. Even though she's harsh on Cat, Gwen is my favourite character. Reccomended for all

I liked at the end the seat said “I belong to Chrestomanci Castle”, and Miss Bessemer stopped it with a stern look!

I liked the magic and it was funny because the boy was called Cat and he had nine lives just like a cat. I would recommend this book.

Personally, this book is better for younger readers, as the plotline is simpler, but still extraordinarily thrilling. It introduces the most exciting, unique, characters to the Chrestomanci series. Chrestomanci is a nine lived enchanter, with extremely strong powers. He starts a school, teaching magic, which goes surprisingly wrong when Gwendolen joins... I would recommend this book for 7-12 year olds, who want an adventure in their lives.

My favourite character was ‘Cat’. He looked small but was very brave and turned out to be the hero of the book. I have marked it down some points as it was not as fast paced as I would have liked.

The story was too sad. And I didn't fully understand it. I liked the bit where Mrs Sharp tricked the Mayor. The ending was too sad. I wouldn't recommend to a friend because it is confusing and doesn't have a happy ending

It wasn't that great but it was okay

It’s the first book in a series of magical adventures. The main character is Cat and his sister Gwendoline who are orphaned and go to live with Chrestomanci. I loved this magical world (one of many).

I love this one! Gwendolen*, who appears to be a witch, is a nasty girl, who has a brother, Cat (actual name Eric) who doesn't think he's good at anything at all. Their parents have both died, and now they're being looked after by old Mrs Sharp. But Gwendolen has written to the powerful enchanter, Chrestomanci, who wants to adopt them. But no magic is allowed without supervision, and now Gwendolen wants her revenge... But what about Cat? He's definitely my fave character, but there's more to him than meets the eye... *Spelling is correct

It was a great read and I loved it, Gwendolyn is one of the naughtiest kids I've ever heard of. Cat is just trying to get his sister back. I am going to read the next book in the series, The Magicians of Caprona.

It is a great book. It was sometimes a little scary, but it is really exiting. My favourite character was Chrestomanci. I would recommend this book to anyone aged 10-16.

I loved this book because I love magic. When I got this book for my birthday a couple of years ago, I thought, "OK, a book. I love books, but this looks terrible." So I put it on my shelf and it stayed there for a few months until I got so bored of not having anything good to read that I tried it. Wow! As soon as I picked it up and read the blurb, I couldn't put it down. There is an unexpected twist in the dilemma of the story, when dragon's blood enters the tale. It gets very intense at times, so be warned!
