In this beloved modern classic, young Sophie Hatter from the land of Ingary catches the unwelcome attention of the Witch of the Waste and is put under a spell…

Deciding she has nothing more to lose, Sophie makes her way to the moving castle that hovers on the hills above her town, Market Chipping. But the castle belongs to the dreaded Wizard Howl, whose appetite, they say, is satisfied only by the souls of young girls…

There Sophie meets Michael, Howl’s apprentice, and Calcifer the fire demon, with whom she agrees a pact. Her entanglements with Calcifer, Howl and Michael and her quest to break her curse come alive with Diana Wynne Jones’s unique combination of magic, humour and imagination.

From one of the most beloved, bestselling and award-winning fantasy writers of all time.

it is a glorious book full of fantasy elements with an awesome Japanese style film counterpart.

It's really good, because it has magic and adventures in one. It's really funny at the same time.

It was very funny and it had a lot of magic in it. I think it was really confusing with all the doors leading to different places. I liked that Sophie and Howl lived happily ever after. It was funny when the spell wore off and Sophie didn't notice.

Nineteen-year old Sophie sets out on an adventure to break her curse. This was a very different story to others; I enjoyed it and hope to read others like this! It has all my favourite genres in it, I love this kind of book! I shall give this masterpiece a big five stars!

This is one of the most thrilling books I've ever read, combining mystery and magic with touches of comedy in places. The relationship between the characters is quite interesting, especially between Sophie and Howl, or even Calcifer and Michael. I would recommend this book for older readers with a liking for magic.

Really enjoyed this book and all the spells and magic. My favourite character was Wizard Howl and also Sophie's magic stick which she talked life into. Am planning to read the second book in the series.

I thought that it was a strange but amazing book. And it explains alot more than the cartoon. My favourite character was Howl's fire demon, Calcifer this is because he is funny and at times stuborn. I would definitely recommend this strange and wonderful book for for children in school years 5-7 although older children would probably enjoy it. This novel was turned into an animated film by Studio Ghibli. I enjoyed the film but found the book better.

This book is about a girl called Sophie Hatter, a hat maker. She hears about a moving castle that belongs to a teenage wizard named Howl, who acts like a baby sometimes. Sophie gets cursed by a witch and ends up as an eighty-eight year old year old travelling with Howl in his castle across different lands. I enjoyed this book because Calcifer the demon sang a saucepan song which made me laugh. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys travelling and magic (and quite kind demons).
