Friend or Foe
Michael Morpurgo
Friend or Foe is a gripping World War II story from War Horse author and former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo. Evacuated from London, David and Tucky feel like the war is a long way away from their new life in the countryside. Then one night the skyline of the moor is lit up with gun flashes, and the distant crump of bombing miles away brings the war back to them and shatters their new-found peace. When a German bomber crashes, the boys feel they should hate the airmen inside. But one of them saves David's life … In the tradition of Goodnight Mr Tom, Carrie's War, and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Friend or Foe is a novel that takes children to the heart of a tumultuous period in history. From the author of War Horse (now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg) comes a stunning children’s story loved by kids, teachers and parents alike. Michael Morpurgo has written more than forty books and won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children’s Book Award and has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal four times.

This is a classic of Michael Morpurgo. As it introduces us to a story of true friendship during time of war. It's a heartfelt story and I always feel like a valuable lesson has been taught with these quick reads of his. Specifically with this one. As the two main characters -Tucky and David- tell the important moral of their story, "Friends do not turn against each other". I often feel a sense of joy when reading it, and I hope you do to.

I quite liked this book because it was set in world war 2 and our topic at school was that and you learn a bit more about it.I also liked the story, although it was an easy and short book over all it was a good book.

I would recommend this book for ages 9 and up because of the topic may upset younger readers! My favorite part was when the boys took the food for the Germans as it was a caring this to do even though they were on a different side. It was very good to read as my topic in school ww2!

My favourite person is David. They go to find a plane crash they find some germans that need help so they help them after they help one of them tell the two boys that one is injured so they take him back. They become village heroes and they told the truth and they did not get in any trouble

I enjoyed this book and wanted to keep reading to see if David and Tucky helped the German soldiers. I liked Tucky the best as he repayed the Germans for helping to save him.

Doctor Horatio Slingshot 05.01.2021

My favourite part is when a German who crashed into a nearby moor whilst in a bomber plane, saved David’s life when he had fallen into the river. He also did lit up a fire to dry his clothes, which was a great risk for him as the light of the fire might be spotted and he may have been discovered with his other friend who survived the crash but with a bad injury to his leg. My least favourite part is when David and Tucky are requested by the German soldier who saved his life, for food, water and blankets but that means that they have to steal from Ann and Mr Reynolds who were so nice to them because he was only meant to take one child but he took in the both of them, even though they had to share beds and all of the other things. David and Tucky are evacuated from London into the countryside and they are then taken in by a kind man who runs a farm. He actually was only meant to have one evacuee, but he decided to take them both in after there was one child left. There is peace until the familiar sound of bombing and the lights of the gun flashes brings the war back to them. They saw a German bomber plane crash on the moor but no one can find the plane or the surviving Germans. One day, David and Tucky find two Germans that survived. They bring them food and water. One of the men goes back as their prisoner but one tries to escape and gets caught. However, their wonderful care-takers agree to keep their secret.

I really liked it , but it was really short. My favourite character was Tucky. I would recommend it to fans of Morpurgo and also people who are interested in world war II.

A very heart-breaking start with a very surprising end! This book wants you to read more and there are many cliff hangers. Here is the blurb: Evacuated from London, David and Tucky feel like the war is a long way away from their new life in the Devon countryside. Then one night the skyline of the moor is lit up with gun flashes, and the distant crump of bombing miles away brings the war back to them and shatters their new-found peace.

I didn’t enjoy this book. This book is set in the Second World War, A boy called David and his friend Tuky, were evacuated to the country side, were a man took them in. However they couldn’t sleep, one night they heard a german bomber plane land near the place they were staying. so the next morning they went to tell the police, but the police didn't believe them. This is a book based on a true story. i liked the Germans best. I would recommend this book to my friend Essie.
