Reviews

I really liked when they went into the whistling caves because they had to use their detective skills to find the culprit. My favourite character was Drift because he was clever, cute and helpful. He found the secret passage to the culprit’s office and found the treasure. I would recommend it to someone who likes adventure and mystery stories.

This book is good because it is very exciting. There is always a mystery to be solved. My favourite character is Drift, Emily’s dog, because he could tell that there was a storm coming and they had to get out of the caves. I would definitely recommend this book to someone else.

Londoners Scott and Jack Carter are spending the summer with their great-aunt (and great cook!) Kate in Castle Key, a small rural island just off the coast of Carrickstowe in Cornwall when they meet local girl Emily Wild and her playful dog Drift. Emily and Drift take the boys to see the phenomonal Whistling Caves - but the caves are strangely silent, for the first time since 1385! Legend has it that the silence of the caves means that the castle will be attacked, and when the priceless Carrickstowe Hoard is stolen from the castle museum it seems that the legend has come true! But how did the thief escape and why did the caves stop whistling? Are the two events connected, and if so how? Find out in The Mystery of the Whistling Caves as you join friends Jack, Scott and Emily to solve the mystery and find the stolen treasure! One of the things I really liked this book was the map at the beginning; in this book it is at its most basic stage although it was adapted twice more after this: this appears from books 1-6, a second edition from books 7-10 and a third from 11-14. I loved the map because it helped me to visualise Emily's home in Castle Key. In this book we learn most about: The Whistling Caves: Reachable by boat, these are just off the coast of Castle Key where the Castle is. The Castle: This hasn't been attacked until 1385! In this book, most of the castle except for the museum where the Carrickstowe Hoard is kept is closed for building repairs. The Lighthouse: Emily Wild and Drift live here in the tall building with nine floors, cellars and a lantern room! Emily's room is on the ninth floor so she gets an amazing 360 degree view. Stone Cottage: Aunt Kate, an author, lives here and Jack and Scott stay with her. At first it seems quite dull although later they grow to love the cottage. Dotty's: Dotty owns this cosy little café with a great view by the seafront. The friends often discuss their mysteries here. Old Bob can also be found here sometimes. I also loved the Cornish names and the history that was incorporated into the story! A great adventure almost resemblant of something like modern Enid Blyton - I'd recommend it to all mystery-lovers 9+! Enjoy reading and solving the mystery!
