Carrie and her little brother are evacuated to Wales and billeted at the home of the bullying Mr Evans and his timid sister Lou. Unhappy at home, they love visiting fellow evacuee, Albert, at the farm of Druid’s Bottom. Here they meet Hepzibah Green, who knows magical stories, and Mister Johnny, who speaks a language all his own.

I liked that it was fiction but I learned things about children during wartime.

I wanted to keep on reading. I liked the characters and I enjoyed the 'twist' in that the main character had presumed something which was completely wrong.

I watched the film before I read the book about four years before and I did not really understand it. Reading it again definitely helped me to understand the story a lot more and I really enjoyed the story!

I thought this book was really good and really well written. It is about a girl who has to move to the country because of the war and made some and and sad times there with her brother, then she returns when she is an adult with her children and it bring back slot of memories. My favourite person was Carrie because she is sensible and caring. I would recommend this book to someone else!

My favourite character was Nick because he’s funny and although he’s young he’s very brave.

I really like carries war because it’s really interesting to learn about the Second World War in a fictional book it’s about Carrie and her brother nick who evacuated to the welsh countryside and who make friends with hepzibah (who is rumoured to be a witch)Although I got a bit confused at the end it’s still a brilliant book I would recommend this book to ages 9+

This was a great book that heart-warmingly described the experience of World War II evacuees. Carrie and her brother, Nick, were evacuated to Wales to live with grumpy Mr Evans and his timid, kind younger sister, Auntie Lou. Their friend Albert Sandwich (another evacuee) is staying at a country house called Druid's Bottom with Mr Evans' older sister, Mrs Gotobed who is on the brink of death, her disabled cousin, Mr Johnny Gotobed who can't speak and the wise housekeeper, Hepzibah Green, who cares for all. It is very mysterious and I recommend it to children aged 9-12, who are confident and brave readers.
