Waterstones Scottish Children’s Book of the Month

Years ago, the Emperor used dark magic to steal all the colour from the world. Now he keeps it for himself, enjoying its life-giving power while everyone else must exist in cold shades of grey. That is, until a miracle baby is born – everything she touches turns to colour. But the child’s life is in danger from her very first breath. Soon the Emperor’s murderous Ripper Dogs and Black Coats come hunting. Can the girl and her adopted father survive in the forest – and what will it take to return colour and hope to the world?

Heart warming filled with bravery and sacrifices. My favourite part is when they all come together and overthrow The Necromancer , I am glad that Hope got to walk the Emperor and Sandy . Oliver and Odd are my favourite characters because they show great bravery and would do anything for who they are loyal to !

My favourite character was a girl called hope ,because she was very inspirational and brave . I would recommend this book to people aged 6-14 .I think it was fiction . It interested me because ,there is a duel point of view ,but in the middle of the book the 2 different characters meet ,they become friends and share there past adventures.

My favourite character was probably Oliver or Darroch. It seems so amazing that all of that happened just because of one wish.

The book follows the journey of Hope, a young girl living in a world where colour has been stolen by the evil Emperor, leaving everything in a bleak, grey existence. Hope, as her name suggests, embodies the last spark of resistance in this darkened world. Her quest to restore colour and joy becomes a symbolic fight against tyranny, where every hue reclaimed represents a victory over despair. The characters are well-drawn, with Hope standing out as a particularly strong and relatable protagonist. Her determination and bravery are inspiring, and her moments of doubt make her feel authentic. The supporting characters, from the mysterious allies she meets along the way to the sinister forces opposing her, are equally well-crafted, adding depth and complexity to the story. While the book is primarily aimed at younger readers, its themes are universal, and its storytelling is sophisticated enough to appeal to adults as well. The pacing is brisk, and the plot twists keep the reader engaged from beginning to end. There are moments of tension and peril, but they are balanced by scenes of warmth and humour, making for a well-rounded reading experience.

This book is full of magic and enjoyment. When a necromancer steals all colour from the world everyone starts to lose hope. Then a miracle child is born with the power to turn anything she touches into colour.
