Mia and the Lightcasters
Janelle McCurdy, Ana Latese
The biggest middle grade fantasy debut of 2022.
Beware of the shadows, the Reaper King is coming . . .
Mia always dreamed of being an umbra tamer until she met the wild creature on the Nightmare Plains. Since that day, she prefers to stay safe within the walls of Nubis. Safe, that is, until a surprise attack. With her parents captured, Mia’s only hope is to travel to the City of Light to find help. But with only her little brother, two friends and one solitary tamed umbra, the journey feels impossible. Mia not only has to overcome her fears, she also has to learn to harness her umbra taming abilities if they are to complete the quest in time.
For fans of Amari and the Night Brothers, The Legend of Podkin One-Ear and Nevermoor, this is the first in the sensational Umbra Tales series, illustrated by Ana Latese.

I would highly recommend this book to people who like mystery murders . My favourite character is Mia because she is brave kind and caring just like me. I first started reading it because the cover looked really cool and now I've almost finished it.

I like this book because it had lots of descriptive words. It intrested me because I read the blurb and it caught my attention. I would definitely recommend this book to someone else.

My favourite characters were lux and nox because one is calm and the other isn't so they balance each other out. They both belong to Mia.

I loved this book! It was exciting, tense and magical. It's about a girl called Mia who lives in a place where it's always night. One day, her parents get captured and she has to travel across the spooky Nightmare Plains with her little brother Lucas, her best friend TJ, her teacher Jada and her magical Umbra creatures, Nox and Lux to the city Stella, to get the queen to help save the city. My favourite part was when she first started to like Lux and Nox. My favourite characters were Mia, Nox and Lux. My only fault with it was that I would have liked to hear more about a thing called becoming one with the darkness. I would recommend this book to readers aged about 10-13 and fans of books like Amari and the Night Brothers and Nevermoor. I am going to read the next one in the series soon because I want to read more about Mia and her world!
