On one side of the underwater street is the remains of a house . . . It’s beautiful here, and eerie, a lost kingdom, a ghost village . . .

It’s the near-future and Britain is having yet another heatwave. Of course, the government have put in the normal curfews for this kind of weather, and shops are forced to shut again. For Polly, it’s the sort of heat that makes her do wild, out-of-character things just to cool down.

Like face her fear of deepwater. Essential when she and her brother have been sent to their aunt’s eco lake-side house for the summer.

But Truthwater Lake is beginning to dry up. As the water level diminishes, a lost village emerges. Swimming over the rooftops at midnight, Polly dives down and is suddenly able to breathe, to hear church bells and bird song . . . Polly has discovered an underwater gateway . . . to the past!

I thought this book was amazing and found it really entertaining, enjoying every second of it. I loved how it was set in two different times. I really enjoyed this book!

I really liked Nellie because she is brave, bold and daring. I wish she didn’t have to give away Perry. I really liked it when Polly went back in time and discovered Nellies childhood. I didn’t like it when Lena just left Nellie. Nellie b came a famous channel swimmer but she didn’t keep in touch with Lena for a long time. When they were both very old Polly who is a child found out that her downstairs neighbour was Lena and her aunts neighbour was Nellie and then they arranged a big surprise and Nellie and Lena lived next door to each other in a care home.

A girl called Polly was suffering 46* heat but luckily found a way to escape it. She ran into an almost completely dried up reservoir fully clothed and discovered a different land. Meanwhile, Nellie Foster really wanted to swim the English Channel but her swimming teacher chose someone else to do it instead. They both had happy endings though as Nellie swum the channel and Polly's town’s heat went down before she went back to school.

I loved this book. I enjoyed how unique it was. I found it interesting that the door handle was the key (pun not intended) to transporting into the past (sorry for the spoilers) as it is a literal doorway into the past!
