A Flash of Fireflies
Aisha Bushby
A magical middle grade book about family, friendship and finding your place, with a delicate touch of magic. Perfect for 10 year olds and fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Michelle Harrison and Kiran Millwood-Hargrave and The Girl Who Speaks Bear.
Hazel’s new life in England should have been the stuff of fairy tales; after all her Great Aunt’s cottage looked just like a gingerbread house, with a magical garden and whispering fireflies promising quests and adventures. But as Hazel struggles to deal with the challenges of the everyday world – making friends, missing her family – shealso learns that every fairy tale has a dark side. And there are terrifying creatures that lurk in the shadows . . .

I love this book, as it relates to real life and anxiety. It follows Hazel, a young girl who is trapped by the fireflies, horrible creatures that order the poor girl around. This really is helpful to those who find life tricky and worry full , and who feel alone. I recommend this book, so read it soon!!!

This book fas fictional. My favourite character was Hazel, not the great Aunt bur the girl that moved from Kuwait. It interested me because on the front caver it says there is a twist to the this fairy tale, which caught my eye. I liked this book because its moral is that you can face your fears, and do not have to follow them.

I think this story made me understand not all fairytales are ver cute and kind but acctually dark and scary. If this book was fiction my favourite person would be Hazel because she would had put up with the scary fireflies which scares me.I would recommend this book to people who are not very afraid that much as this book gave me goosebumps.

This book was something that I never expected to read. This topic, of OCD really interested me and the away the author wrote, is amazing. This book was fiction has it had as it had a delicate touch of magic but other than that is also had family, friendship and finding your place. My favourite character is Ruby, who becomes hazel's (main character) best friend. I don't want it to change one bit!

This book is about someone called Hazel, who moves to England from Kuwait, and some magical fireflies keep visiting her and transporting her to a magic forest where she has to pick fruit for them in a quest. She makes friends with someone called Ruby at school, and lives with her great aunt. The next quest the fireflies give her in the magical forest is she has to find a key from a headless horseman. He will give it to her if she gives him a wolf's horseshoe, who will only give her that if she gives him a witch's hag stone, who will only give her that if she gives him a white rabbit. Her grant (great aunt) owns a white rabbit as a pet, so she plans to give it to the witch for the hag stone, but then rescue the rabbit. She puts salt around the rabbit to protect it, and then gives the wolf the hag stone, who gives her the horseshoe, which she gives to the headless horseman, who gives her the key. She then rescues the rabbit. The fireflies want to give her another quest, but Hazel refuses. At the end it turns out that she has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
