‘A writer with an utterly distinctive voice and a wild imagination’ – Philip Pullman
‘A truly compelling read … totally original and yet has the familiar feel of an established classic’ – Jacqueline Wilson
A story of friendship, hope and sweeping adventure in the snowy wilds of Russia, The Wolf Wilder is a modern classic from internationally bestselling author Katherine Rundell
Feodora and her mother live in the snowbound woods of Russia, in a house full of food and fireplaces. Ten minutes away, in a ruined chapel, lives a pack of wolves. Feodora’s mother is a wolf wilder, and Feo is a wolf wilder in training. A wolf wilder is the opposite of an animal tamer: it is a person who teaches tamed animals to fend for themselves, and to fight and to run, and to be wary of humans.
When the murderous hostility of the Russian Army threatens her very existence, Feo is left with no option but to go on the run. What follows is a story of revolution and adventure, about standing up for the things you love and fighting back. And, of course, wolves.

Reviews

I thought it was really exciting and at the end of almost every chapter there was a cliff hanger. My favourite bit was at the end when it said,'and in the ballroom lived three wolves. One black, one white, and the third, much smaller than the other two, had patches of both colours ;his chest where his heart lay, was grey'.

This is a fiction book about a person who trains wolfs to fight again in the wild after they have been used as pets for the richer people but when a important general comes to tell them off will they ever get to tame wolfs again

Katherine Rundell is a really popular writer and you can really tell why. All her books are put forward for awards and everyone wants to pre order them. This story is no exception. It is about a girl called Feodora, her life is made up of wolves. It is just her, her mama and her precious wolves. Though, sometimes things do not exactly go to plan. There are losses and there are victories. There are tears and there are smiles. There are foes and there are friends. There is fights and calm waters. This story makes sit at the edge of your seat and bite your nails. So, what are you waiting for. You know it has to be good, because it is written by Katherine Rundell.

Oh my goodness this book was one of the best I have ever read: 12 year old Feo is a wolf wilder, along with her mum. She lives with wolves in a snowy wood in Russia. One day, soldiers come and take her mum to prison because of the wolves killing elks, and Feo must hatch a plan to get her mother back...

What an incredible book. I became completely immersed in the world of Feo and her wolves and could not put the book down. The description is incredible throughout and the plot makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I would recommend to for KS2 children who like adventure and excitement, with a historical element (Tsarist Russia). Brilliant!
