The Boy in the Jam Jar: A Bloomsbury Reader
Joyce Dunbar, John Shelley
Book Band: Lime, ideal for ages 6+ A powerful and personal story from Joyce Dunbar about what it's like to experience hearing difficulties. 'Joyce Dunbar is one of the best writers for children today.' Guardian Dylan can't hear as well as he used to be able to and he doesn't want to be different from his friends - he wants things to go back to the way they used to be. As his hearing gets worse he becomes more and more isolated from his friends. Luckily his dog Pluto is there to keep him down to earth... This heartwarming story from Joyce Dunbar has beautiful black-and-white illustrations by John Shelley and is perfect for children who are developing as readers. The Bloomsbury Readers series is packed with book-banded stories to get children reading independently in Key Stage 2 by award-winning authors like double Carnegie Medal winner Geraldine McCaughrean and Waterstones Prize winner Patrice Lawrence. With engaging illustrations and online guided reading notes written by the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE), this series is ideal for home and school. It was too young for me but younger readers might enjoy it.

I liked what the book was about which was about a boy who was deaf. I liked the character of Dylan because he ignored what people said when they were laughing at him for being deaf and by the end of the book he was a hero. I think the chapters were a bit short for me though.

I liked the book because it has 72 pages and 9 chapters and the main character is Dylan and he is a lovely boy and is deaf and needs hearing aids to hear properly and his mum said to him that to be deaf is a skill and makes you be perfect but Dylan says he does not want to be perfect.

If you can’t hear well and people have to shout it doesn’t matter because you are still special.

The is a fiction book. I liked it but found some of the words quite tricky. My favourite character was Dylan.

I thought the story was a very good story and I would like a 3 out of 5 I thought it was quite good but I found it quite sad because the boy in the end was death so that’s why I rated three out of 5. It was a story as there was no facts so my favourite person was dog because I love dogs and the dog was very friendly.

It’s about a boy who starts being deaf and it’s really short

Good, about a boy who cannot hear. I liked the dog because he found the boys hearing aids when the boy lost them. Great for beginners.
