Where the map ends, the adventure begins . . .
It is midnight in Crackledawn – a midnight full of magic. Sea dragons stir in the depths of the ocean, silver whales surface beneath the moon and sand goblins line the shores. Everyone is waiting for the phoenix, the guardian of the kingdom’s magic, to rise up from the forests of Everdark.
But there is no sign of the phoenix tonight. Something else surges up out of Everdark instead: a harpy bent on stealing Crackledawn’s magic.
It is up to an eleven-year-old girl called Smudge and a grumpy monkey called Bartholomew to set sail beyond the legendary Northswirl and stop the harpy before it’s too late.
So, grab your compass and roll down your sail – the first adventure in THE UNMAPPED CHRONICLES is about to begin . . .

I loved Smudge in this book because she learnt to believe in yourself and she was a hero.
Lady Honeycomb Pipistrel 28.07.2024

This book was really good and magical because it proved that everything was possible and that if you believe in yourself and others believe in you, then -honestly- everything is really possible.

Empress Pixie Sunshine 01.08.2022

This is a fast-moving magical story involving fantastical, mythical creatures. I love the ingenious heroine and the way her mind works. Also the name of the characters, islands and ships are really cool and clever. I would recommend this to 10-13 year olds.
Viscountess Sapphire Snivel 21.07.2022

The book was very good and I loved the concept but it was very short so I didn’t get into the book as much as I have with longer books.

I totally love Abi elphinstone. Smudge was my favourite character and I couldn’t put this book down! I can’t wait to read more stories like this!
Professor Ursula Frankenstein 30.08.2021

I thought that this was a great book because it is about a harpy, who is selfish and wants to rule with no magic, so Smudge and Batholomew have to save the kingdom since everybody else is under the nightdaggers

I found this book , the first in Abi Elphinstone's The Unmapped Chronicles series , a little hard to get into but once Smudge (the main character) set sail on her world-saving adventure , it got more exciting and engaging. I have read the other books in the series and I think they are better , I couldn't really imagine what the world of Crackledawn really looked like in my head. That said , there were so many original ideas that seemed so ingenious for example : the obligasaurus chair which is a chair which is really helpful and it gives you whatever you need and tidies up , watergum which is gum that allows you to breathe, laugh, speak and even burp underwater , mersilk which magically restores torn sails and many more! I would recommend it to readers aged 9+.

I loved this book my favourite part was when they defeated Moreg the harpy (don’t read this comment if you have not read the book). It was amazing
