It's 1945 and the war has ended. After 5 happy years in America, Rusty must return to England, a country that now feels unfamiliar and alien to her. Adjusting to life in England is not made easier by the facts; that she now has a strong American accent, an exuberant personality and questions everything. She is sent away to boarding school, where she is bullied by her fellow pupils and teachers, causing her to feel more and more isolated. Having loved ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’, I was keen to see what else the author had written, and I am pleased to report that ‘Back Home’ was another masterpiece. I think this story would appeal to anyone who has ever felt left-out or lonely. I would highly recommend this book to children of 10 years or older.
