Some Places More Than Others
Renée Watson
From New York Times bestselling and multi award-winning author Renée Watson comes a heartwarming and inspiring middle grade novel about finding deep roots and exploring the past, the present, and the places that make us who we are.
‘Some of the places I am still getting to know, some of these places I have known all my life. All of these places made me, are making me.’
All Amara wants for her birthday is to visit her father’s family in New York City – Harlem. She can’t wait to finally meet her Grandpa Earl and cousins in person, and to stay in the brownstone where her father grew up. Maybe this will help her understand her family – and herself – in a new way. But New York City is not exactly what Amara thought it would be. It’s noisy, crowded, confusing, and her cousins can be mean. Plus her father is too busy working to spend time with her and too angry to fix his relationship with Grandpa Earl. Amara can’t help wondering, even if she does discover more about where she came from, will it help her know where she belongs?Reviews

I thought this book was very interesting. It is about a tween girl who wants to go to New York to meet her dad's side of the family. She finds out more about her families past and all their tragic losses. I would recommend this book to people who like travelling.

It was ok however it was a bit boring and short. It is about a girl and her father and her grandpa don’t get along. She tries to seek out her family heritage and history by exploring New York and asking people ,like her cousin, auntie and grandpa ,questions. If you like inspirational books with lots of American history then this is the book for you

This was a fantastic book about discovering secrets about heritage. The Main character, Amara, goes to NYC and discovers secrets about the past generation. But when she tries to get her grandpa and dad talking again, she finds out about her dads poetry and that her grandmother had died the day she was born. She also has an argument with her cousin. (She sorts it all out in the end). I really liked this book.

This book was amazing and very lovely to read. It was about family, problems and many other stuff. There were some pros and cons, so it was very interesting. I recommend this book to people who are bored and looking for something to read.

I liked this book because I liked the idea and message about family. I felt connected to the main character. The start didn’t amaze me and the plot could have a bit more. It was very American but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to age 8+ and it is about family love.

I like that it was about finding about family origins, and the story created for the family was really quite good, but it wasn’t that exciting as all they do was wander around and sight see. The drama was in their heads as they found things out, not in action.

This was a fictional novel. I really enjoyed this book because there was always something exciting happening and I couldn’t put it down.My favourite character was Amara, because she is so determined to go to New York, and she is always trying to bring her dad and grandad back together again.I would recommend this book to someone who likes a bit of family drama.

The story is about Amara going to visit her dads family in New York. Amara’s dad and grandad had not spoken for a long time because they were fighting at the grandma’s funeral Amara wanted to go see her dad side of the family for her school project. I like the story but didnt like the part when her cousin was not being very nice Amara. Amara Is my favourite character because she is gentle and kind. I would recommend this book to them because it is like a real life story about a girl and her family.
