Winner of the Branford Boase Award 2021, a breathtaking fantasy adventure for fans of His Dark Materials that The Times calls ‘Unputdownable’.

The City was built on a sharp mountain that jutted improbably from the sea, and the sea kept trying to claim it back. That grey morning, once the tide had retreated, a whale was found on a rooftop.

When a mysterious boy washes in with the tide, the citizens believe he’s the Enemy – the god who drowned the world – come again to cause untold chaos.

Only Ellie, a fearless young inventor living in a workshop crammed with curiosities, believes he’s innocent.

But the Enemy can take possession of any human body and the ruthless Inquisition are determined to destroy it forever.

To save the boy, Ellie must prove who he really is – even if that means revealing her own dangerous secret . . .

‘Unputdownable’ – The Times

‘Enthralling’ – The Daily Express

‘Sumptuously atmospheric . . . tirelessly inventive’ – The Daily Telegraph

‘Gripping’ – The Guardian

‘Energetic and inventive’ – Sunday Times

‘Gripping and original’ – The Observer

‘Singularly brilliant’ – Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink and Stars and The Mercies

I really liked this book because it was about a world where everything was sunk because of a quarrel between the gods. However one place (The City) wasn't. A girl called Ellie has to go on a mysterious adventure to help the earth and find out about a lost boys past, but the Enemy is unleashed

At the beginning there's a girl and a whale who got stuck on the roof because it was high tide. The people believe if you don't cut the whales open then they give off a toxic gas! All the people are scared of it so the girl goes up to it and cuts it open. Instead of finding guts and things, Ellie and her friend find an arm and a boy comes out! They take him back to Ellie's house but they have to leave the city because people are looking for the boy because they think he's the enemy. They find a picture of people coming out of animals with halos above their head so they believe the boy isn't the only one and that's why they are searching for him to kill him.

I rated it a four because I liked the book but it was a bit boring kinda but overall it was dramatic and had fiction not a lot of comedy but it was good.my thoughts on what I have read is actually pretty good because it had all the stuff I like except comedy.I liked the boy who came out of the whale because he survived there for many years and didn't die.it interested me because it had a scary but child friendly cover and was just right for me.I would definitely share and recommend this book to someone else and if you like drama, fiction, scary and a little bit of comedy then this book is just right for you and parents. 4/5

This was a very entertaining book and I was very happy with this book. It is about this girl called Ellie and how this boy washes up on the tide and the whole city thinks he is the vessel. Even Ellies best friend Anna thinks he is the vessel. Ellie wants to prove he is not the vessel, even if she has to reveal her secret. My favourite character is Anna because she is smart and is good with little kids. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is AMAZING! One of the best children's books you will ever read! The book is fantasy fiction and I'd say my favourite character is Seth as he is part boy and part water God. I would completely recommend this book to anybody who loves fantasy genre books. It is best for year 5 or year 6.

Very tense. Loved every part of the book. I liked the part where we find out that Ellie is the Vessel and how she proved that even if she has something cruel within her, she doesn't have to be like that. Would recommend it to anyone who has secrets of their own and don't know how to share them.

This was an incredible book which I would definitely recommend for people who like adventurous stories. The front cover is awesome too. The setting is in the middle of nowhere on an island called The Enemies City. The best bit was when Ellie invented a golden pocket watch that could make them time travel.

This book was good, although it took a while to get to the interesting part. Despite the wait, it was worth it, since the plot is amazing! I really like Ellie. She is a brave inventor who will do anything to save an unknown boy. I was completely shocked by the plot twist at the end! I really enjoyed it.

This is an amazing book about a girl named Ellie who finds a boy inside a whale. Unfortunately, the whole city thinks that the boy is the Vessel, the person with the god who drowned the gods living inside them, and takes him away to be executed. Only Ellie believes he's innocent, but proving the truth would mean risking everything… My favourite character in this book was Ellie because she is kind, determined and brave.
