Nobody visits Eerie-on-Sea in the winter. Especially not when darkness falls and the wind howls around Maw Rocks and the wreck of the battleship Leviathan, where even now some swear they have seen the unctuous Malamander creep…

Herbert Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, knows that returning lost things to their rightful owners is not easy – especially when the lost thing is not a thing at all, but a girl. No one knows what happened to Violet Parma’s parents twelve years ago, and when she engages Herbie to help her find them, the pair discover that their disappearance might have something to do with the legendary sea-monster, the Malamander. Eerie-on-Sea has always been a mysteriously chilling place, where strange stories seem to wash up. And it just got stranger…

I wouldn’t normally have picked up a book about on a sea creature, but I gave it a try as it was highly recommended by my librarian. What a wonderful adventure this turned out to be, with 2 interesting main characters! Herbert Lemon manages the Lost-and-found section of a famous seaside hotel, and Violet is an orphan who turns up at the hotel in search of her missing parents. Following the detailed map that’s included within the book helped me feel part of Herbie and Violet’s adventures at every step! I loved when the pair meet the supposedly scary Malamander fish-man and Violet bravely talks to him in a soothing voice, which almost works until there’s an interruption. Do read the book to find out. I can’t wait for the sequel Gargantis now.

I like the name Herbie Lemon and the mystery of the Malamander because it is really interesting. Mr Mallosc is very funny, and the cameraluna is a super cool thing to have invented. I wonder: will everyone have one in the future? I like Violet Parma because she is extremely brave, and it must be terrible to not even know what happened to your parents, not even knowing your mum's name! I think the Malamder doesn't mean to be mean, but he only does it because he is trying to protect his egg. I think I would do anything to protect my egg or my child. It was fiction, because there was the monster called the Malamander, 'Boathook Man' could come out of taps, Erwin could talk, and there was loads of other stuff that was magic. I would totally recommend it to people who aren't afraid of monsters under their bed, and who love mysteries, adventure and magic like me.

The Malamanda is a monster and the egg it lays is magical. Herbie lemon is a lost and founder staff who is brave,a bit wimpy and bold.
