Written by Toby Ibbotson, son of the bestselling author
Eva Ibbotson, this exceptional middle grade story is captivating,
heartfelt and brilliant in equal measure.

When a storm hits a small and sleepy town, it ravages every living thing. But storms don’t just destroy, they uncover. And when a young boy discovers a mysterious object that has lay hidden beneath a centuries-old tree, he instantly knows that it’s special. What he doesn’t know is that his unexpected find will unite him with a girl searching for her missing father and trigger a series of events that will see them travelling across Europe under the most unusual circumstances. Beautifully written, The Unexpected Find is Toby Ibbotson’s break-through masterpiece that’s a classic in the making.

I didn't like the beginning of the book but as the story was fleshed out, I began to like the characters more and more. The ending was very satisfying to the reader. My criticism of the book is that it felt slightly too preachy in places, especially for middle-graders.

This book is great because it's really exiting but the part in the camper van is just really boring because there is not much action.

I found this book very capturing and that you couldn't stop reading it, let alone stop wondering what was going to happen next! My favourite character was William because his naivety was very funny and amusing to me.

I love that when Judy goes looking for her dad it intertwines her life with others.

It was an extremely good book and I really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the beginning of it where they introduced the characters before they started the book. I liked the character Judy the most because she had the most mysterious past. I would recommend this book to any readers age 8+, because any readers younger than that might find it hard to read because there is a lot of text and no pictures. Even adults could read it! Over all it was a very good book.
