The Space We're In: from the winner of the Yoto Carnegie Medal 2022
Katya Balen, Laura Carlin
We are her world and her universe and her space and her stars and her sky and her galaxy and her cosmos too
Frank is ten. He likes cottage pie and football and cracking codes. Max is five. He eats only Quavers and some colours are too bright for him and if he has to wear a new T-shirt he melts down down down.
Sometimes Frank wishes Mum could still do huge paintings of stars and asteroids like she used to, but since Max was born she just doesn’t have time.
When tragedy hits Frank and Max’s lives like a comet, can Frank piece together a universe in which he and Max aren’t light years apart?
This jaw-dropping, heartbreaking and hopeful novel from debut author Katya Balen will remind you we are all made of stardust. For fans of thought-provoking, moving middle grade from Wonder to Skellig

This book was also absolutely amazing. It had a lot of twists in it. It is a fiction book. I really liked that is was all about Frank's (main character) life and an autistic brother. The most saddest twist was that his loving mother.. died. it was so sad after that I even cried! There life was just.. broken into pieces. My favourite character was mum (who died) she was so loving and sweet. I would recommend this book to 10-14 yearS or older.

This book was absolutely fantastic. I cried so many times, but it was so worth it! It really spreads awareness about mental health and well-being as well as taking nothing for granted and living with a disability or with someone who has one. I even got in contact with this author and she was truly lovely. Love this book; would recommend it to everyone and anyone!

I loved this book, although it was a sad book but I still enjoyed it. My favourite character was Frank, as he loved his younger brother, Max, despite Max taking all his parents attention and time. They used the Morse Code in this book that I found interesting.

Very emotional book. It tells the story of an 11 year old boy who had an autistic younger brother. The author writes in detail about how difficult it can be living day to day sndcdd we get difficulties and frustrations his brother faces. Their mum who is so supportive and has a love of art I expectantly dies. Reading how the boys cope without her is st times hard to read and very moving but I couldn’t put it down.
