Inkling
Kenneth Oppel
Mishaps and madness ensue when magical drawing ink comes to life in the Rylance home and 11-year-old Ethan tries to prove he’s just as talented as his famous father.
A moving but light-hearted story about grief, family and a sixth-grade rivalry. When Ethan’s class is given the task of creating a graphic novel and magical ink jumps out of his father’s sketchbook, a strange series of events is set into motion. To his younger sister, Inkling is Lucy, her beloved dog; to his father, Inkling is a second chance at a dwindling career and a chance to solve his family’s money worries. Friends and enemies alike try to use Inkling to ace tests and create bestselling comic books, but to Ethan, Inkling is his friend – and he must do everything in his power save him.
Reviews

From a famous comic book artist’s sketch book, something emerges, something moves … but only the cat was awake to see. Later in the morning, the boy Ethan finds it. He thinks it’s a tarantula or a rat at first, but he soon learns it’s much, much more. It’s not a tarantula or a rat. It is a sentient ink blob. And his name, is Inkling. I don’t think you should allow your kids under 6 to read this book, as it’s highly emotional at the end.

It is a fictional book about a splash of ink. It has adventures and causes lots of mischief.

I loved this book because it’s about an ink blob that can shape into anything and can draw perfectly. It comes from a famous artist’s imagination which I love because I use my imagination a lot. My favourite character is Inkling, the ink blob. Inkling had the courage to go to his greatest fear: The sketchbook. He did this to destroy another ink blob called Blotter who wants to eat him. I definitely would recommend this to someone else.

It was amazing! I loved the way it was written, and the cute but clever inkling. I wish I could draw like him/her!
