In this book from the critically acclaimed, multimillion-copy bestselling Little People, BIG DREAMS series, discover the life of Wilma Rudolph, the remarkable sprinter and Olympic champion.

Wilma was born into a family with 22 brothers and sisters, in the segregated South. She contracted polio in her early years and her doctors said she would never walk again. But Wilma persisted with treatment, and she recovered her strength by the age of 12. At school, Wilma showed a talent for basketball and sprinting, earning the nickname ‘Skeeter’ (mosquito) as she ran so fast. Wilma was in college when she went to the 1960 Olympics. She not only won gold in sprint events, but also broke world records with her sprinting skill. She had beaten polio to become an Olympic champion. She is a huge inspiration to many women in sports around the world. This moving book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the athlete’s life.

I liked thatch was so fast that if you blinked you couldn't see and you would miss her. She won every race. She is even faster than a gazelle. I liked that this was a real life story.

Found it sad how she had to have a leg brace for years but at the same time happy for her because she was able to walk as well as run at the age of nine

I liked it when she was told that she could never walk again but her mum told her that she would be able to and she went on to win 3 gold medals in the Olympics in Rome! I thought it was really really really good! It tells us that sprinting isn’t just for boys but girls can do it too. Wilma Rudolph showed one of our core values of perseverance. I would recommend it to someone else. I read the book because my class in September is called Wilma Rudolph and you wanted to learn about her.

Wilma was an inspiration because even though she was told that she wouldn't be able to walk without a leg brace she proved that as she got older she could be the fastest runner. Wilma was overjoyed when she knew that she didn't have to have a leg brace anymore, she carried on her hope of wanting to become an athlete. It shows that you can become whatever you want to be if you put all of your strength and mind to it.

This novel inspires me that anything is possible if you set your mind to it, just like Wilma Rudolph even though had most of the diseases in the world, she never gave up and over time was one of the fastest women. If you are ever down or doubting yourself that you can't do something always remember Wilma.
