This series of hilarious fictional diaries put us inside the heads of hapless figures from history. Marcus is a 15-year-old boy living in Pompeii in 79 AD. During a trip to Rome with his merchant dad, he finds himself tricked into becoming a gladiator and forced to fight deadly warriors in the arena.

Will Marcus manage to escape his imprisonment? And will he learn to fight and distinguish himself as a gladiator… or will he just run away screaming?

‘Get Real’ fact boxes featured throughout, as well as a timeline, historical biographies and a glossary in the endmatter, provide historical context and further information.

I liked how they mixed together a made up story and added real facts in to it. The main character got tricked by a real gladiator

Funny book where you feel sorry for the main character

My thoughts are that Marcus would pass away as a gladiator. about this story I think that we should never underestimate gladiators. If it was fiction my favourite character would be Marcus. If it was factual Lucia was the best. I would like to give it to my brother.

I would recommend this book to people who like the Romans, gruesome deaths, dangerous injuries, cunning tricks and gladiator fights. My favourite character is Marcus (the main character). I admire his bravery to fight his heart out as a gladiator even though he accidentally became one and didn't even like gladiators. I think this book most of the time is brutal, gruesome and scary. At other times it's emotional and also sometimes heated conversations and superstition.
