‘Lavishly written and full of love of the natural world.’ – Sunday TimesShifa and her brother, Themba, live in Kairos City with their father, Nabil. The few live in luxury, whilst the millions like them crowd together in compounds, surviving on meagre rations and governed by Freedom Fields – the organisation that looks after you, as long as you opt in.
The bees have long disappeared; instead children must labour on farms, pollinating crops by hand so that the nation can eat. The farm Shifa and Themba are sent to is hard and cruel. Themba won’t survive there and Shifa comes up with a plan to break them out. But they have no idea where they are – their only guide is a map drawn from the ramblings of a stranger. The journey ahead is fraught with danger, but Shifa is strong and knows to listen to her instincts – to let love guide them home. The freedom of a nation depends on it . . .Endorsed by Amnesty International.

A really nice book about love and how you don't miss something until it’s gone. It’s also about family. I would definitely recommend this book to all people.

I love it! Especially when Shifa Aziz and her brother (Themba Aziz) becomes friends with Luca Freedom and finds a way out of the miserable Freedom Fields using Lona’s rhythms! I recommend this book!

I loved it because of its high vocabulary words which I learnt much from and amazing storytelling. Sit Brhamachari deserves a big well done. My favourite character was Luca because he managed to change the way he lived and learn from the good. I recommend it to people who like books about nature. I also recommend it for reading about global warming and world destruction.

This is the story of a girl who runs away from a menacing society where kindness means nothing. Packed with suspense and sadness, Brahmachari's heartbreaking novel made me cry. A must-read for children and young adult readers alike... a unique book that will stay with you long after you have turned the first page.

I really like this fiction book because I felt like it gave you hope even if you were down and that it shows that there is always a solution to the problem even if you don't think so at the time and that is an important lesson. also, I think other people will like the book because it has a lot of action. Finally, my favorite character in the story was Shifa because she was kind and caring and never gave up hope.

A great adventure, set in a dystopian future, with themes of social justice, climate change and the importance of biodiversity. Lots to talk about!

I love this book! It has some really good points on how people are treated because of their ‘class’ and climate change effects as well as being a really good read. My favourite character is Shifa because she doesn’t give up easily and always tries to change things for the better. My least favourite characters are the ‘Crows’ or the Freedom Fields leaders. I would recommend this book for 10-13 year olds because it’s quite down to earth and not sugar coated. It’s also a good book for a stretched out read. Overall, this is one book that deserves the prize it won - the Waterstones children book prizes- more then most books ever written!
