The Ruby in the Smoke
Philip Pullman
The first book in Philip Pullman’s classic Sally Lockhart
quartet in a beautiful new edition. Soon after
Sally Lockhart’s father drowns at sea, she receives an anonymous
letter. The dire warning it contains makes a man die of fear
at her feet. Determined to discover the truth about her father’s
death, Sally is plunged into a terrifying mystery in the dark heart
of Victorian London, at the centre of which lies a deadly blood-soaked
jewel. Philip Pullman’s ever-popular, action-packed Victorian
melodramas are rejacketed for the bicentenary of Charles Dickens
in 2012.

This is a really exciting book where Sally learns about the reason of her father’s death.

It was a bit slow to get to the exciting bit and I did struggle to understand the language used, though it was written in English, at times. But I feel once you get to used to the way characters speak and the book has picked up some pace, it is rather a mysterious, secretive, and detective book. Happy Reading!

Quite good but you have to read to the very end to understand it all.

This book was really good but Phillip Pullman in an excellent author so I expected it would be. Sally is a very interesting character and very unique, which is obvious from just the first paragraph. It even mentions that she is no ordinary girl. The mystery and adventure in this book is very entertaining and tou are constantly on the edge of your seat. I would reccomend.

It's a sad mystery book and some parts of it don't make sense to me. Maybe better for an older child - 11+

I thought it was really good and my favourite character was Sally Lockheart. This book was fictional novel from the victorian times. It involves murder and mystery and death when Ms Holland jumps of a cliff. I would recommend this book to people who like his dark materials and are interested in the victorian times.

The book was really good and my favourite character was Sally lockheart she was also the main character in this novel. I would recommend this to year 6 and above because it could be scary for some people because a character called Ms Holland jumps of a cliff and dies and Sally shoots this man with a pistol. I found it breath taking that her father had died at sea and that she ran away from her cruel aunt. Definitely 5 stars.
