A swashbuckling pirate adventure story from the author of the critically acclaimed Hour of the Bees.

When her marine scientist parents are killed in a tragic accident, eleven-year-old Fidelia Quail is racked by grief – and guilt. It was a submarine of Fidelia’s invention that her parents were in when they died, and it was she who pressed them to stay out longer when the raging Undertow was looming. But Fidelia is forced out of her mourning when she’s kidnapped by Merrick the Monstrous, a pirate whose list of treasons stretches longer than a ribbon eel. Her task? Use her marine know-how to retrieve his treasure, lost on the ocean floor. But as Fidelia and the pirates close in on the prize with the navy hot on their heels, she realizes that Merrick doesn’t expect to live long enough to enjoy his loot. Could something other than black-hearted greed be driving him? Will Fidelia be able to master the perils of the ocean without her parents – and piece together the mystery of Merrick the Monstrous before it’s too late?

I thought that this book was really good, I rate it 4/5. The reason I marked it down 1 was because it got a little confusing at some parts of the story, other than that the story/storyline of the book was so good!! I loved reading it and am excited to read another of the author’s books. I would definitely recommend!

This was a very exciting story. The main character Fidelia Quail was very brave and very clever. She is kidnapped by pirates who need to use her invention to reclaim a lost treasure. In parts this book will make you cry - I promise you that, but it drags you along at a fast pace. I would recommend this to anyone that loves the sea and adventure. 9+ Mrs. H.

When tragedy strikes and the young eleven year old, inventor,Fidelia Quail is abducted ,while her parents Ida and Aurthur Quail are lost at sea by an undertow, by the infamous pirate, Merrick the monstrous. He demands her to find his precious little bit of treasure lost at the bottom of the ocean floor. With the navy hot on their heels , Fidelia realizes that something other than black hearted greed is driving Merrick. I think using her skills Fidelia is going to invent a machine to find the treasure. It interests me because of Fidelia being independent and not giving up.
