Another adventure at River Bend Ranch, and another book on my shelf by Terri Farley my top fave author! This time Sam Forster, thirteen year old girl rescues a mare, Dark Sunshine, from rustlers. She's afraid the rustlers will recognize her though, and that's not her only problem. Brynna Olson, from the BLM has made an agreement, with Wyatt Forster -Sams dad- to host the HARP program and River Bend Ranch for a trial run, and if its successful, it'll continue. Sam feels unsettled, having just returned home, she doesn't want to share her home, her horses, her family, her friends with a stranger. Mikki Small isn't just a stranger though, she really wants to get to know horses, just has a uncanny knack for hiding her feelings. She makes fun of Sam and her hints about Brynna and her dad unsuprisingly, infuriate Sam. So one day when Mikki acts suspiciously sweet, Sam feels worried that somethings up. Mikki goes to the barn to 'give Popcorn a sugar cube' and comes back smelling of smoke... Suddenly, there's a fire, almost on the new bunk house and the barn. The fire fighter service arrives shortly and they battle the flames. Mikki and Sam need to solve their problems, and thats not all. The rustlers are back, and catch Sam red handed, she manages to wriggle her way out, but follows them out of the frying pan, into the fire. Sam panics, will she escape? Will someone rescue her? What will happen?
