The first book in the award-winning Mortal Engines quartet.  In a dangerous future, huge motorized cities hunt, attack and fight each other for survival. As London pursues a small town, young apprentice Tom is flung out into the wastelands, where a terrifying cyborg begins to hunt him down. Mortal Engines launched Philip Reeve’s brilliantly-imagined creation, the world of the Traction Era, where mobile cities fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic future. Mortal Engines won the coveted Gold Smarties Award. Now a feature film of the same name, starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan and Hugo Weaving. Produced by Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson.

The world was very imaginative and I liked the characters. Some times I got a little bored with the plot and it was a predictable at points

I enjoyed reading mortal engines because, there was a lot of twists and turns and you never knew what was going to happen next. My favourite character was Hester Shaw and Anna Fang because they have both had hard and painful pasts and where both outstandingly brave. I have recommended this book to anybody I could but I will say I would recommend this book to good readers who are 9+.

I was surprised to enjoy it as much as I did. I wasn't expecting to find such great characters in science fiction.

Very dramatic book and imagines a very different future with London on traction wheels! Big towns eating small towns! Lots of action and sad in places too. Enjoyed this book very much.

I liked this book because it was really interesting and based in the future, where different countries and cities had made huge machines and put historical buildings and houses on top and would go around the world destroying other machines to survive. My favourite character was Hester Shaw because her parents had been killed but she still persevered to stop London from destroying everyone. I would recommend this book, I really enjoyed reading it.

I liked the idea of moving cities, but it was a sad ending.

Mortal Engines describe a post-apocalyptic future where there is chaos and cruelty. Cities are literally hunting each other down and destroying one another in order to gain resources and power. Larger cities prey on the weak and any settlements which are not moving are seen as an abomination, backwards and against the evolution of the way society now lives. I felt that the character development was good and the way that Tom and Hester interacted throughout fit with their nature but towards the end it felt very rushed and some events I didn't feel linked in the same way as others. I would recommend it to people who enjoy futuristic stories with a bit of action.

Mortal Engines is a Fiction book about the dangerous future and an ancient killing machine. I liked Tom the most because he is brave and trustworthy. My favourite part of the story was when Tom and Hester found out that Valentine was in the huge city, destroying the air fleet. Another tragic event was when Valentine devoured his only daughter. I would recommend this story to 10 or above who might enjoy action and some gory events.
