From master storyteller MICHAEL MORPURGO, and illustrated by the award-winning EMMA CHICHESTER CLARK, comes a surprising, charming and uplifting twist on The Wizard of Oz, told by a very special and unforgettable character: Dorothy’s pet dog, Toto. A perfect, collectible gift for all children (and children at heart). “I was there,” Papa Toto said, and those magic words sent shivers down my spine. It was going to be the Wizard story. “Dorothy and me were both there.” We were all silent, snuggled up together, waiting, waiting. Then Papa Toto began… When a twister descends on their Kansas farm, Toto and his owner Dorothy hide in the house – only to be plucked into the air and whisked away! Coming down with a crash in the mysterious land of Oz, the pair meet a series of extraordinary characters: a scarecrow who believes he has no brains, a tin man without a heart, and a cowardly lion who may not be as cowardly as he thinks he is. But Toto and Dorothy are desperate to return home – after all, home is home, and home is best! So they set off with their new friends on a journey down the yellow brick road to find the only person who might be able to help them: the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But what they find might surprise them. And on the way, all of them will learn that what they think they are missing might have been there, all along… Beautifully illustrated throughout, this is an unforgettable telling of a classic story, and a must for every bookshelf.

I’ve read some of Michael Morpurgo’s books in the past so when I was choosing some books to read for the summer reading challenge 2023 at my local library and I saw this book I didn’t think twice about borrowing it! Especially since I know the original story very well and saw the Amazon prime series “Lost in Oz” many times! And I’m so glad I did borrow it because it was amazing! The story starts of with Toto (who is the dog from the original story) telling his 7 puppies the story of how he and his owner Dorothy Gale got Lost in Oz! Everything in the story is very similar to the original, Dorothy’s house gets picked up in a twister / tornado and together with Toto the two of them (and the house!) get transported from Kansas to the land of Oz. They meet Scarecrow along the way and then Tin Woodman and Lion. When Dorothy’s house landed in the land of Oz it fell right on top of the Wicked Witch of the East. The story is about how the 5 friends follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City where they finally meet the Wizard of Oz. He asks them to go find the Wicked Witch of the West and kill her for him as she is so cruel to everyone. If they do that he will grant them each what they so desperately wish for. Lion will be given courage, Tin Woodman will be given a heart, Scarecrow will be given brains, and Dorothy and Toto will be transported back home to Kansas, back to their aunt and uncle. So the 5 friends set of again on a mission to destroy the Wicked Witch of the West, the wickedest witch there ever was! But the journey is very long, hard, and dangerous. Will they ever reach her in one piece? Will Dorothy and Toto ever get back home to Kansas? Read the book to find out! If anybody is wondering, the book has 286 pages and took me just a day to read. I recommend it to anyone 7+ who loves adventure books and magic! Michael Morpurgo is an incredible author and all of his books are really good. This book is so good!

Toto is basically the Wizard of Oz story but from Toto’s the dog, point of view. This is a lovely book by Michael Morpurgo. I would recommend it to 8 to 12 year olds. I read this book with my mum although it took three months to read it we still loved it.

I would recommend this story to anyone else as it's a lovely story about a girl and her journey to find her way home. I like how it is told from the point of view of the dog! He, Toto, is my favourite character. It was very funny when they met the Wizard of Oz because they found out that he wasn't very special at all, in fact he was an ordinary old man! But Dorothy was happy to keep his secret if he helped her to get home.
