Jemima Small Versus the Universe
Tamsin Winter
Shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2020, meet the funny and fearless Jemima Small in this big-hearted, whip-smart story of friendship and body confidence.
I’m going to tell you the word that ruins my entire life: BIG. Because my name is Jemima Small. But I am exactly the opposite.
Jemima Small is funny and super smart. She knows a lot of things. Like the fact that she’s made of 206 bones, over 600 muscles and trillions of cells. What she doesn’t know is how that can be true and yet she can still feel like nothing… Or how being made to join the school’s ""special"" healthy lifestyle group – A.K.A Fat Club – could feel any less special.
But Jemima also knows that the biggest stars in the universe are the brightest. And maybe it’s her time to shine…

Reviews

This book was so good and very inspirational. I think the message that this book was trying to convey was very important . Some of the things that Jemima had to go through were horrible and nobody should ever have to feel like that in real life. This book shows that it's okay to be different and that everyone is different very important for everyone to know this. Jemima was my favourite character because she was so caring and kind and funny and strong even when things got difficult

Some points were pretty sad but I’m very happy that , Jemima decided to stand out and not to hide her body. This story has good morals and I’m happy my school selected me to read it, I’m also surprised she got second in the show. It’s good she’s friends with the winner though.

I loved this book. Sometimes I feel exactly like Jemima, because of my size. But this book reminds you to remember there's more to yourself than looks

I really enjoyed this book! I liked how it talked about fat-shaming and how Jemima felt uncomfortable in her body openly but also talked positively about her as well. I enjoyed the storyline and I really like the books by this author!

Jemima is girl who looks different to everyone else, but she’s not proud of it. At school she gets bullied, and then gets put into a special club. Can she overcome her fear and complete her dream?
