In the Mouth of the Wolf
Michael Morpurgo, Barroux
A true story of two brothers and the war that changed everything.
Michael Morpurgo’s wonderful storytelling and Barroux’s stunning artwork combine to tell the true story of Michael’s uncles against the epic backdrop of World War Two. Francis and Pieter are brothers. As shadow of one war lingers, and the rumbles of another approach, the brothers argue. Francis is a fierce pacifist, while Pieter signs up to fight. What happens next will change the course of Francis’s life forever … and throw him into the mouth of the wolf. –- Michael Morpurgo has written over one hundred books and won many awards. In 1976 Michael and his wife Clare started the charity Farms For City Children, which aims to relieve the poverty of experience of young children from inner city and urban areas. In 1999 they were awarded the MBE for their work in creating these farms and in 2006 Michael received an OBE. His novel War Horse has been adapted into a hugely successful and critically acclaimed West End play.Michael is a tireless champion for children’s books and was formerly the Children’s Laureate.
Born in Paris, Barroux spent much of his childhood in North Africa. He later attended art school in France. He received widespread critical acclaim for Line of Fire, Diary of An Unknown Soldier (Phoenix Yard) and Alpha (Barrington Stoke). In 2015 Barroux won the first Parents, Babies, a Book competition for his work Chuut! which will be given to every baby in the north of France. His stunning book Where’s the Elephant? (Egmont) has been longlisted for the Kate Greenway Medal 2016.Reviews

I enjoyed this book as it was based on a true story and even though bits were sad there were also happier parts of the book.

It was a very emotional story about Francis and Peter the two brothers. Sadly Peter died in the war . Francis was married to nan and had a baby . Then he went for the war same like Peter . His plane got crashed but he survived. At the age of 90 Francis died . People who love war and emotion would love the book

My favourite part is when Francis and his companion are saved from being shot during the war after they were taken to a prison and maybe a few hours, or even minutes before they were going to be shot, their friend Christine saved their lives by threatening some of the soldiers by saying that she’d have the Americans rip them limb from limb. My least favourite part is when the Resistance received more weapons but the Germans spotted them and started to attack with their fighter planes. The little village that the weapons were dropped into was bombed and citizens wounded or even killed but Francis and some of his companions survived. This book just shows how much you can grow and change during your life and what an impact war has on your life. It shows just some of the horrors of World War II and how the army survives all of this. Francis joined the army when his brother, Pieter is killed. He has many brave companions, and once the war is over, he can finally go back to teaching in a school like before. However, his friend Christine is killed by presumably a madman in a hotel lobby in London.

I thought it was quite sad because it was based in the Second World War. However, it was interesting because it told you a bit about it. My favourite character was Christine because she was very brave and she could overcome her fears easily. For example she was always scared of cycling but she had to cycle 20km to free her friends from the Germans. I would recommend it to people who like books based on true stories.
