The Pearl in the Attic
Karen McCombie
A story of family, friendship and mystery from one of the UK's best-loved writers. When Scarlet's grandma goes into a retirement home, she must sort through her belongings in the cramped flat above a shop in Crouch End, north London. Here Scarlet comes across a real treasure: a novel that Gran wrote, imagining the life of a girl just like Scarlet, who once upon a time lived in the flat and worked in a cake shop downstairs. But as Scarlet reads about Ruby's life in Victorian London, she begins to realise this is no piece of fiction - Ruby was real! A real life, facing real danger - and a mystery that unravels to the present day. For fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Katherine Woodfine and Emma Carroll

A heart touching story about a girl who's grandma is admitted into the hospital. Sadness devours scarlet but when she finds a book written by her grandma a glimmer of happiness shines back

This book is an exciting book about a girl who discovers a "fictional" book which might not be as it appears

This book was really good, but not my favourite. I think it was quite sad that Patsy got Dementia. But I enjoyed reading it.

I loved this book. It’s about a girl called Scarlet who is staying at her grandma’s house and it’s full of the most random things! But hidden amongst the clutter is little stories that Scarlet’s grandma has written and the trail starts in the attic. But as Scarlet reads she feels that it’s more than just a some stories. My favourite characters are Scarlet, Ruby and Pearl because they’re such lovely girls and very brave. It took we a while to get into the book but I loved it in the end! I would recommend this book for 9+ and for people full of curiosity.

At first I found it quite boring but as I got further into the book i couldn't put the book down. My favourite person (animal) in the book was probably pearl or Mr spinks or Angie. Yeah I would recommend it to someone who likes that type of book

This is a very good book but it confuses me however it is the best. I wanted to know if Scarlet, and her rapidly expanding. It is one of my favorite books and I like it because there’s a lot of mystery and suspense this made it very interesting to me and captured my brain so it urged me to read on and finish the book. At first page was very boring at first but as I read on I actually realize I have an interesting book another bad thing is that that was kind of a rude word in the book that made me sad so I didn’t read it I was so intrigued into what the book was going to be about that I decided to read on despite the rudeness. Think like she’s a good author but sometimes I just feel like she could i’ve made it better. I definitely recommend it. Marshall phoenix mitten

This book is really good. The way it confuses you but then explains everything as clear as possible is the best thing that I love about this book.

I enjoyed this book, one of the reasons being that sometimes I wanted to know aout the modern girl, scarlet, and her rapidly expanding family. However, I also liked Ruby's life in edwardian london. I found it grueling in the middle, exiting at the beginning and moving at the end.

This is quite a confusing story because it features a book within a book, but it is still really fun. It even tempted me to look up locations from the book, like Alexandra Palace. The main character is a girl called Scarlett whose granny's health is getting worse. When Scarlett discovers that her granny has written a book all about her life, she just has to read it!
