A poignant story about dealing with grief through the magic of reading and friendship. Calypso's mum died a few years ago and her emotionally incompetent Dad can't, or won't, talk about Mum at all. Instead he throws himself into writing his book A History of the Lemon. Meanwhile the house is dusty, there's never any food in the fridge, and Calypso retreats into her own world of books and fiction. When a new girl, Mae, arrives at school, the girls' shared love of reading and writing stories draws them together. Mae's friendship and her lively and chaotic home - where people argue and hug each other - make Calypso feel more normal than she has for a long time. But when Calypso finally plucks up the courage to invite Mae over to her own house, the girls discover the truth about her dad and his magnum opus - and Calypso's happiness starts to unravel. 'A story of great warmth and emotional wisdom' LINDA NEWBERY

This was an amazing story, it had very high vocabulary words (including - loquacious, sophistication, diminutive, captivated, hybrid and volatile). I loved learning new words. This was a fiction book but it could be a real story. My favourite character was Calypso because she had to go through a really hard time but she was really brave. I would highly recommend this book, it is about friendship.

This book was not what I expected and had quite a sad ending. Calypso always thought she was an independant person with inner strength. A girl who enjoyed the company of books over people but when she meets Mae the new girl who shares Calypso's passion of reading maybe Calypso thought wrong? As the girls become strong friends they face challenges togethor. Will they be able to stay strong when Calypso needs Mae most?

I liked Calypso's dad the best because her moved books out of the library and put lemons on the shelf instead. It was a good book.

I think this is one of the most emotional stories I've ever read because it's about Calypso who goes to young carers' group and her dad goes to counselling. It's a big idea and inspires me about how many people's lives are different in many ways.

I think it was scary when Calypso got so mad she threw all the lemons that replaced mums books and mean things to her at same time.

I would recommend this to someone else if they were an older child e.g.9+ because it is about a child who persuades her Dad that you don't have to be independent and that you can have friends that help you. It is quite sad because her Mum has died.

This book is about... Books! Friendship & Lemons!(of course!) It is about a girl called Calypso (like the song). She normally keeps her head burried in a book. When a new girl comes who likes the same things as her, they make a very special friendship. She, Calypso, finds a sad secret hidden in their fathers library, she realises that something is very wrong...I If you want to find out what happens, read the book!

I loved this book; it really made me realise the reality of some people’s lives and how things are sometimes really not what they seem. A truly inspiring tale written by a truly inspiring author: Jo Cotterill, who I managed to get in touch with and was lovely! Anyone who wants to understand someone else’s situation or just wants a good read, I recommend this book!

It was a fiction book and my favourite character was either Calypso or Mae. I would recommend it to people who like drama books.

This book is really good and has a nice moral of family, kindness and friendship. Its about a girl called Calypso and her bestie Mae(a girl who recently joined her school.)One day when Calypso's dad's book doesn't impress the publishers, he becomes distant and Calypso must help him get back to normal.(The dad's book is about lemons just like his favourite fruit.)

I love this book as sometimes you want to laugh but other times you want to curl up and cry. I love the characters as well as the idea and plot of the entire story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading books about real life. My favourite person is Mai because I can relate to her a lot.
