The Apprentice Witch
James Nicol
Studio Ghibli meets Diana Wynne Jones in the first spellbinding APPRENTICE WITCH book! ‘Reminded me of the best of the Worst Witch books’ ABI ELPHINSTONE ’A charming tale of magic, bravery and friendship, reminiscent of Diana Wynne Jones.’ GUARDIAN ’The Apprentice Witch is entirely more charming, adventurous, and full of heart than a book has any right to be.’ TRENTON LEE STEWART ‘A delightful, witty and vivid story’ KIRAN MILLWOOD HARGRAVE Arianwyn fluffs her witch’s assessment. Awarded the dull bronze disc of an apprentice – to the glee of her arch-rival, Gimma – she’s sent to protect the remote, dreary town of Lull. But her new life is far from boring. Turns out Gimma is the pompous mayor’s favourite niece – and worse, she opens a magical rift in the nearby forest. As Arianwyn struggles with her spells, it’s soon clear there’s much more than her pride at stake … A bewitching debut set in a world of domestic magic – a refreshingly small-world fantasy perfect for readers aged 9 and up. A spellbinding read, tapping into important themes of overcoming failure and building self-esteem. Filled with thrills, pesky magical conundrums, outlandish creatures and an enchanted forest, yet retains its warm soul and earthy charm!
Reviews

Arianwyn was my favourite character because she never gave up when times were tough. She found hope when they thought all was lost.

I liked this book because it had adventures in and was fictional. I also liked this book because it had fairy-like creatures and involved magic.

After Arianwyn flunks her witching test, she is awarded a bronze disc and is sent to protect the city of Lull, which has not had an apprentice witch for quite a while. Later on in the story, Gimma, Arianwyn's fierce foe turns out to be the Mayor of Lull's niece, however is not so perfect as everyone suspects to be able to control her powers. Arianwyn then discovers the fact and becomes Gimma's friend. The Apprentice witch then meets people on her journey...

Things didn't always go to plan, but somehow they always come out the other side.

This Apprentice Witch is a fictional book because there are witches and magical creatures. I liked the magic glyphs because they had interesting names and designs. Estar, a magical creature, is blue and the size of a miniature human. Sometimes he causes mischief, but he doesn’t mean to, it’s because of his looks. My favourite characters were Arianwyn, Salle and Estar. This story is about how Arianwyn proves her magic abilities. Can she save her new friends and family?

This book was amazing and I loved the suspense it brought with every twist. My favourite character is Arynwyn -known as Wyn to Salle- as she casts lots of wonderful spells using the glyphs. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves magic, suspense and adventure.

Arianwyn lives with her Grandmother and is a witch. Her evaluation was coming up to decide whether she is a qualified witch. The machine they use to decide tells everyone she is unqualified but that is because her reading is so high she broke the machine. Colin (the person who did her evaluation) gave her a moon badge the 1st person not to get a star badge. She is sent to Lull to be an apprentice witch. But Gimma the bully from school is an ‘excellent’ witch she try’s to disguise the fact that she lost her place at Kingsport because she is rubbish at spells. When Gimma opens a rift to banish a creature she releases a night ghast. Arianwyn uses glyths to cast spells she keeps seeing an unknown glyph a shadow glyph she uses that to defeat the night ghast and send it back to the rift.
