A stand-alone comic adventure for younger readers by sublime storyteller Vivian French, with pictures by a talented new illustrator and animator, Marta Kissi. Alfie Onion has just set off on a great adventure … but only to carry his brother’s luggage. It’s his elder brother, Magnifico Onion, who’s destined to win their family a Happily Ever After. But when it turns out Magnifico isn’t half the hero he’s cracked up to be, it falls to Alfie to save the day – with a little help from his loyal dog, a talking horse and a couple of meddling magpies.

The adventures of Alfie Onion was very funny and easy to read with a great moral story. It’s cute, fun and fast paced. It made me feel happy. It has talking animals, trolls and ogres. I really liked the animal characters and tried to do different voices for all the magical characters, a dog, a horse, two mice and some meddling magpies who all talk. I was pleasantly surprised by how the story was so appealing. It begins with Alfie’s mother, Aggie Onion, who when she was young was given a book of fairy-tales. Upon realising that she was not going to be rescued by a prince she decided to create her own happily ever after. The majority of the book focuses on Alfie Onion (the eighth son, unimportant brother and unconventional hero) and his great adventure which is carrying his brother’s luggage as Magnifico Onion (the all important seventh son of the seventh son yet also the greedy brother) sets out to find a princess and bring back her wealth to the Onion family. Magnifico isn’t half the hero he is cracked up to be. He is spoilt and lazy, but that is from years of his mother doting on him feeling that he was her only hope for happiness. Alfie’s character is much more admirable, likeable and realistic young hero. He is more suited to being a hero. He is clever and thoughtful. He has to do everything for his spoilt brother. Alfie tries to save the day. My favourite character is Alfie Onion as he was kind and thoughtful and the real hero of the story. I would very much recommend this book as the writing and illustrations are very enjoyable and worked well together. I liked the hilarious dialogue and the lessons of doing things for yourself and going after what you want rather than what someone else wants for you. If you want something, you have to make it happen, not wait for someone else to do it for you. It also had a nice happy ending.

This amazing book includes a selfless character called Alfie who journeys with his greedy brother to keep his word to his obsessed mother. he is a part of an adventure story and I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy as well. it involves ogres, trolls, princesses and princes.

This book was featured an obedient kid who is an inspiration to kids. despite the horrible fact that his mother despises him as her own child he kept his own word. this is an adventure book and a fantasy story. his greedy brother absolutely disgusts me but it was heart warming to find out he turned grateful and selfless.

This book, "The adventures of Alfie onion" was very interesting. This book has got some good facts. If you like a comedy then this would be a book you would enjoy. However there is a little bit scariness in this book.
