The Emperor's Egg
Martin Jenkins, Jane Chapman
An award-winning picture book about the Emperor penguin’s parenting.
The Emperor penguin is the only large animal to remain on the Antarctic mainland throughout its bitterly inhospitable winter. Once the female has laid her egg, she heads back to the sea, leaving the male to incubate it. He then spends two months standing on the freezing cold ice with the egg on his feet! This is his story.
Reviews

The end bit was very funny, because the mummy penguin coughed up food into the chick's throat.

I liked that it told us some facts and I learned that the male penguins can make a milky substance to feed their chicks while the mother penguin is away.

I liked that the mummy has to do all the work because the mummy penguin has a nice long summer holiday while the daddy penguin sits on the egg.

This book is about an emperor penguin taking care of his young, still inside the egg, as his mate goes off to catch some fish. It tells you some interesting (and disgusting) facts about penguins, e.g. when the female comes back it vomits up the fish that it has caught into the baby's mouth...and the baby likes it! It is a cute story about my favourite animal. I would recommend this to penguin-lovers and people aged 2+
