Opal Plumstead
Jacqueline Wilson, Nick Sharratt
‘Opal – plain-talking, fiery Opal, who fights her fellow workers, has taken over the entire design department and is now a mini-suffragette?
Opal Plumstead might be plain, but she has always been fiercely intelligent.
Yet her scholarship and dreams of university are snatched away when her father is sent to prison, and fourteen-year-old Opal must start work at the Fairy Glen sweet factory to support her family.
She struggles to get along with her other workers, who think she’s snobby and stuck up. But Opal idolises Mrs Roberts, the factory’s beautiful, dignified owner.
The best thing about Mrs Roberts? She’s a suffragette!
Opal’s world is opened to Mrs Pankhurst, and the fight to give women the right to vote. And when Opal meets Morgan, Mrs Roberts’ handsome son , and heir to Fairy Glen- she believes she’s found her soulmate.
But the First World War is about to begin, and will change Opal’s life for ever.
A brilliantly gripping wartime story from the bestselling, award-winning Jacqueline Wilson.

I liked this book because it tells the story about two girls and a mum that discover that their father has stolen some money and gets sent to prison! It's a wonderful book and I really enjoyed it.My favourite character has to be Opal because she is so creative with what she does and is just a tiny bit jealous of Cassie because she want to look like her.I feel sorry for Opal when her father goes to prison because she loves him so much.Like Opal,I was incredibly proud of her father to finally be getting his book published after all these years of writing and editing.I envy Opal's giant paintbox with thirty - six paints and her skill for art.Opal has a best friend called Olivia who thinks she is a professional at art.Opal thinks she isn't that good at art but she is.I wish she was real so I could be her second best friend and convince her on how great she really is.If she was real,Opal could come and finish her degree.Opal could come and live with me,meet all my new friends and live in enjoyment and peace.I understand how she feels every single day. When I read the book about her life,I felt desperately connected with her and felt as if she was sat next to me expressing her feelings with me.It's an incredible book and it's one of the closest book to my heart.I would recommend this book to my new friend Danielle because she would really connect with the characters, especially Opal.
