The World According to Humphrey
Betty G. Birney, Jason Chapman
Faber’s bestselling hamster series is given a smart new livery, repositioning our favourite as a perennial classic character, sitting alongside the likes of Winnie the Pooh and Wind in Willows.
‘The time had arrived to put my Plan into action. I was in grave danger and I had no choice. I only had one weapon: a rubber band. It had taken me a long time to get it hooked around the edge of my food dish. Now I carefully pulled it back as far as I could, aiming directly at those big doggy nostrils.’
You can learn a lot about life by observing another species. That’s what Humphrey was told when he was bought as a classroom pet for Room 26. And it’s definitely true! In addition to his classroom escapades, each weekend he gets to sleep over with a different student like Stop-Giggling-Gail and Repeat-That-Please-Richie. Humphrey learns to read, write, shoot rubber bands and much more. With adventures galore, Humphrey’s life would be absolutely perfect if only the teacher, Mrs Brisbane, wasn’t out to get him . . .

I thought this book was very funny because I liked it when Humphrey was playing Catch Me with Mr. Brisbane.

I enjoyed the book very much, but I think they just raced through some of the events too quickly. Also, I am not sure why Mr and Mrs Brisbane behave differently from how they do in the other Humphrey books (I've read them). My favourite character in this book was probably Speak-Up-Sayeh Nasiri, because of her courage to speak up when she is scared about people hearing her accent. She changes through the book and her mother even learns English! I liked how both Humphrey and Sayeh won a prize at the Halloween party, because in this story those two characters were my two favourites. (With Mr and Mrs Brisbane coming third.) My favourite part was Humphrey and Mr Brisbane's contest, and I do wish that Humphrey hadn't let Mr Brisbane win (but it's all for the best I suppose). It was fun reading about a chase and the different ways Mr Brisbane had thought he could catch Humphrey. There was a little humour too in that scene, I think. This book is fun, and I also like it when Wait-For-The-Bell Garth Tugwell firstly starts off by sort of bullying everyone (including poor Humphrey) but then sharing his problems with Mrs Brisbane and then going off to Lower-Your-Voice-.A.J's house to see Humphrey, who is staying at the Thomases' house for the weekend. Apparently .A.J's name is Anthony James, which I did not know, so I learnt something from this book about the children in Room 26. The main thing I'm not sure about in this book is why Mrs Brisbane acts so unkindly at first to Humphrey, but then appreciates him, and I find it odd, which is a reason I dislike this book, because whenever I read Humphrey books, she is always really pleasant, kind, thoughtful and smart, although she was still smart in this book. Mainly though, this book was super-enjoyable.

I like all the puns. Humphrey said squeak for yourself when he meant speak for yourself. It's a fiction book. My favourite characters are Humphrey and Richie because he reminds me of my friend who has a squeaky voice too. It was as funny as the killer cat's Christmas and I would recommend it to my brother.

I loved The World According to Humphrey because it is really funny and exciting. My favourite character is Humphrey[a hamster] because he is really cool and funny. My favourite part is when Humphrey gets his own play park to play in in his cage. I would recommend it to people who like animals and are interested in looking after a hamster. Thanks Bye
