A heartbreaking story, narrated by twelve-year-old Jack, whose family is caring for fourteen-year-old Joseph. Joseph is misunderstood. He was incarcerated for trying to kill a teacher. Or so the rumours say. But Jack and his family see something others in town don’t want to.
What’s more, Joseph has a daughter he’s never seen. The two boys go on a journey through the bitter Maine winter to help Joseph find his baby – no matter the cost.

This book had a very sad and unexpected ending. It provoked a reaction so it was very effective.

Orbiting Jupiter by Gary.D Schmidt is written from the perspective of a young boy, who I believe is 10 or 12, so the language seems to be quite simple. I didn't originally like this at first, but as I read on in the book realized it was necessary for character/plot development. It's strange to see such big events/issues described in such a simple way, to the point I guess. This book broke my heart and definitely brought a tear or two to my eye! Heart-wrenching yet beautiful.

This book was a very short read and I think I would have enjoyed it if it had been longer and written in a different style of writing that wasn't as simple. I did enjoy it though. However I was disappointed with the ending. It was a good storyline and I would recommend it to slightly older readers.
