Binny for Short: Book 1
Hilary McKay
From the winner of the Costa Children’s Book Award 2018.
Binny’s life has been difficult since her father died and her dreadful old Aunt Violet disposed of her beloved dog, Max. Her world changed then, to a city flat with not enough space for her Mum, her big sister Clem and her small brother James. Definitely no room for a pet.
Then one day Aunt Violet dies, leaving a small cottage in Cornwall to Binny and her family. Binny finds herself in a new world once more, full of sunshine and freedom and Gareth, the enemy-next-door and the ideal companion for dangerous dares. But Max is still lost in the past, and it seems impossible that she’ll ever find him again…
Reviews
My favorite character was Binny because she was very adventurous. I would recomend this book to children who like adventure. Also I thought James was quite funny and he took a chicken from the old ladys which was a very silly thing to do.

I thought that this was a very good book and it reminded me of one of the characters in one of Hillary McKay's other books called rose. My favourite characters are Binny and Gareth as they have an unusual friendship which takes them through highs and many lows throughout the book.

It was an amazing book. I loved it and I really liked Binny. My favourite characters are Binny, Clem and James. My favourite bit of the story was the ending when they found out where the dog Max had been living and Binny and Gareth agreed to share him.

Good book and I find it funny, my type of book but it gets annoying when things come up again and again. I like it when Binny stands up for herself even though sometimes she may get a bit rude but that's what makes it funny. Brilliant book!

This is a warm, funny story about a very unique family, who are very close to each other. It leaves you with a good feeling, and as though you have been with friends.

It is all about this girl called Binny and her family, her mum, her dad, her older sister Clem (Clemency) and younger brother James. Everything is running smoothly until her dad does, and her mum takes her black and white sheepdog Max to their Grannies. Binny's dreaded Aunty Violet takes Max away from Granny as Granny is struggling with Max. So Aunty Violet takes Max somewhere, but what has she done with him? Binny hates her aunty from this point on. Will Binny ever see Max again. This book is really good with lots of things going on all the time. Amazing book!
